Application of Rocktech ISG series gateway in automated power distribution

Time:2026-04-28 Source:ROCKTECH Views:0

In China’s 14th Five-Year Plan for Power Development, it is clearly emphasized to further strengthen power security guarantee capabilities and advance the supply-side structural reform of the power industry. Currently, power grid equipment from different manufacturers adopts disparate design standards and incompatible communication protocols with diverse communication methods. The intra-station communication network fails to realize information sharing, accompanied by excessive secondary cables, confusing signal definitions, complex system architecture, and poor real-time performance and reliability of network communication. These issues greatly increase operational difficulties.

Manufactured by Rocktech, the ISG series gateways comply with the IEC60870-101/104 protocols. Actively involved in the boom of the Power Internet of Things, Rocktech is committed to achieving ubiquitous connection and open sharing of resources.

Electric power is converted from primary energy in nature through mechanical devices and delivered to end users via power transmission, transformation and distribution. It forms an integrated production and consumption system covering power generation, transmission, transformation, distribution and power consumption. The invention and application of electric power triggered the Second Industrial Revolution, ushering in an era where technology continuously improves people’s lives.

As a country with a population of over 1.4 billion, China has realized universal power access nationwide, which benefits from the tireless efforts of power industry practitioners. China’s power generation capacity ranks first in the world. Relevant statistics show that 70.4% of China’s total power supply comes from thermal power generation, occupying a dominant position in the national power supply. Thermal power fuels mainly include coal, petroleum, natural gas, as well as crop straw and domestic waste. It features easy access to raw materials, mature technology and wide geographical distribution.

Power distribution serves as a core link in power operation. Its development has evolved from manual operation and monitoring of distribution substations and line switching equipment, to the application of time-sequence power supply devices, and further to comprehensive distribution automation. The fundamental goal is to realize automated operation and management of power distribution, so as to improve overall power utilization efficiency.

China’s 14th Five-Year Plan for Power Development focuses on enhancing power safety assurance capabilities and promoting supply-side structural reform in the power sector. At present, power grid equipment from various manufacturers has inconsistent design standards and incompatible communication protocols with multiple communication modes. Restricted by isolated intra-station networks, information cannot be shared efficiently. Other pain points include redundant secondary cables, non-unified signal definitions, complicated system structures, and insufficient real-time performance and stability of network communication, all of which raise operational challenges.

Built with native IEC60870-101/104 protocols, Rocktech ISG series gateways are deeply applied in the Power IoT field to facilitate ubiquitous connection and open data sharing.

The full range of ISG gateways supports mainstream acquisition protocols including IEC60870-101/104, DNP3.0, CJT188-2004 and DL/T645, covering multi-scenario data collection demands in the power industry. It supports cloud transmission via BACnetIP, MQTT and OPCUA protocols with breakpoint resume transmission function. Multiple security mechanisms such as user identity authentication and data encryption ensure network and data security. In addition, the devices support convenient local configuration and VPN remote management.

As an entry-level model, the ISG-100 provides cost-effective cloud access for a small number of devices. The ISG-200, a standard industrial intelligent gateway, is equipped with rich peripheral interfaces and communication ports to meet cloud access requirements for most industrial scenarios. The ISG-300 integrates a 7-inch touch screen and built-in SCADA software, enabling local data visualization as well as cloud upload services.

The ISG series gateways connect with secondary equipment through RS485/RS232 interfaces. Collected data is transmitted to base stations via 2G/3G/4G networks, and then forwarded to the power master station through VPDN. Optional split-type or all-in-one visualized gateways with embedded SCADA software are available to build a closed-loop data transmission system and empower the intelligent upgrading of automatic power distribution.
